"In Him we live and move and have our being." (Acts 17:28)

God Favours Us

Genesis 24

If Isaac was going to inherit the father’s empire, he must be ready to go by some of the choices of the father. He was obedient to his father to marry from Abraham’s lineage to ensure continuity in God’s redemptive agenda. Hence, Abraham sent his most trusted servants on this mission and God granted him favour.

What can we learn from this chapter?

#1. Abraham’s Instructions. (Genesis 24:1-9)

Abraham gave clear instructions to his oldest servant concerning a bride for Isaac. He told him two important things: One, the spouse must come from his tribe. Two, the spouse must come to Isaac, not Isaac going to her. They were so important that Abraham made the servant swear to God to comply with the instructions. Marriage is an important adventure. If we mess up in marriage, it can affect other areas of life. Paul teaches in Corinthians that believers must not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Christian marriage must be between a born again Christian man and woman. It’s a kingdom family affair just like Abraham’s family affair.

#2. The Servant’s Pursuit. (Genesis 24:10-54)

The servant was obedient to his master and packed his things and left in pursuit of a bride for Isaac. The importance he attached to this mission led him to commit everything to God for success. He prayed that God would help him and indeed, God favoured him as requested. God answers our prayers. James 5 says that the effective fervent prayers of the righteous man avails much. Just as the servant asked the Lord and received answers, we must ask God and He will give to us our heart desires. There is nothing small nor big for God to answer.

#3. Rebekkah’s Response. (Genesis 24:55-65)

Rebekkah did not only help as the servant requested of the Lord, she told her family and they invited them in. They officially made the marriage proposal to the family and Rebekkah responded in the affirmative. She was to become the mother of thousands of thousands. She indeed agreed when she had not seen the man. When God opens a door of opportunity, we must not reject it but accept it and walk in. Faith is accepting what God does for us when we have not seen all the indicators. We must take the first step and trust God to deal with the rest. Make a move when the door opens.

#4. Isaac’s Acceptance. (Genesis 24:66-67)

After all the work done by the servant, the spouse was accepted by Isaac. He didn’t question the choice but embraced her as his wife and she comforted him after his mother’s death. A spouse comforts in times of challenges. Marriage was ordained by God for companionship. When God brought Eve to Adam, he accepted her as bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. They were joined together as one. That’s the mystery of marriage.

God is able to perpetuate His purpose in us though the ordinary means of grace. He gave Isaac a spouse to help him achieve his plan on earth as the patriarch of the Holy people of God. God has great interest in everything we do including finding a spouse.
